Materials and Construction

Wood has extraordinary qualities: it is an organic element that contains the characteristics and unique beauty of the tree it comes from. It is also a material that, when well worked and cared for, can last and be fully functional for hundreds of years (one only has to look at 17th-century Italian string instruments or the roofs of hundreds of medieval buildings still standing in Europe to confirm this). Wood is, finally, a sustainable product that can be developed and, eventually, discarded without endangering the ecosystem.

These qualities make wood the perfect material for the ·33· project. We build with the idea that each pair of eyeglasses should be beautiful, unique, durable, and in harmony with the environment.

All ·33· glasses are handmade, from wood cutting to finishing, in our workshop in Tenerife. Our production process has been refined over years of experience and innovation to create the highest quality eyewear, always relying on handcrafting for each activity.

The artisanal process for producing eyewear requires, on the one hand, rigorous management of each stage of production, testing, and final review of the work; on the other, a high degree of experience and skill from the craftsman who builds the glasses. It is a costly and risky process, but its results are unique objects, of distinctive beauty and elegance, yet solid and functional.

The industrial process, on the other hand, has as its central objective the mass creation of identical objects, indiscernible from one another. This is the antithesis of what we seek as the objective of ·33·

For over 150 years, Carl Zeiss has been producing high-quality optical elements, which have been used to build everything from microscopes for biological research to the cameras that filmed classic movies of cinema history. In sunglasses, Carl Zeiss lenses provide a visual experience of extraordinary sharpness and definition, as well as eye protection with the latest generation of UV and anti-reflective filters. The result is an optical quality that is far superior to that of any other sunglass lens on the market.

Flex hinges allow the temples to open laterally by approximately 20 degrees, maintaining a centripetal tension when opening. This makes it very simple to put on and take off the glasses without damaging their structure, and also helps the glasses stay in place.

Use and Care

No, ·33· eyeware are as durable as other sunglasses, though they have their own characteristics: they are less prone to bending than metal eyeware, and they are more resistant to scratches or marks than acetate based eyeware. A key difference from eyeware of other materials and brands is that ·33· sunglasses can be repaired always and for life.

We suggest to always store your ·33· glasses in the provided hard case when not in use. If they get wet, we recommend drying them thoroughly with a dry cloth or tissue paper and letting them air dry in a cool, dry place. It is recommended not to expose your ·33· glasses to intense heat.

The woods we use to build ·33·, and the treatment they receive during the production process, prepare them for a long life. The wood of the glasses will incorporate the interaction with the elements—the sun, the air, the moisture of the wearer's skin—and will develop its own distinctive character over the years, darkening or lightening, and revealing its deep grain.

To maintain the qualities of Carl Zeiss lenses for as long as possible, it is recommended to wash them with the ·33· microfiber cloth and either an optical spray or a water and neutral pH soap solution. It is recommended not to use clothing, paper, or alcohol-based solutions for cleaning the lenses.

Sustainability

All the woods used in the construction of ·33· eyewear come from certified sustainable forests. These forests are located in Africa.
